In short
BT Business Broadband only means a BT broadband plan with no phone line. Full Fibre (FTTP) and Standard Fibre (SOGEA) are single-order connections, and BT says most areas can get broadband without a line. Some BT copper lines still need a BT Business phone line. A number can be kept on a Digital Line or BT Cloud Voice.

Do I need a phone line for business broadband?
In most places, no. BT says that in most areas you can get broadband without a phone line, and that it is no longer selling traditional phone lines because of the digital switchover.
That is possible because of how broadband is now delivered. The access types BT sells for business are:
| Access type | How it connects | Phone line needed? | BT plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Fibre (FTTP) | Fibre all the way from the exchange to your premises | No | Essential, Enhanced, Pro, Ultra |
| Standard Fibre (SOGEA) | Fibre to the street cabinet, then copper to your premises, ordered as broadband only | No | Essential, Enhanced, Pro, Ultra (Standard Fibre 76) |
| Copper broadband | Copper from the exchange to your premises | Some BT copper lines need a BT Business phone line | Essential, Enhanced |
SOGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access. "Single order" is the point: the broadband is ordered on its own, without a phone service on top. Our SOGEA and BT Business Full Fibre pages explain each one, and FTTC vs FTTP compares them.

Where a phone line may still be needed
BT's own terms say that some BT Business Broadband lines still require a BT Business phone line. In practice this is about older copper connections at addresses that do not yet have Standard Fibre or Full Fibre. These are becoming rarer as the old phone network closes, but they still exist.
We check before you order. If your address can only get copper, we tell you what the order involves, and whether Full Fibre is planned for the area. If you are currently on older fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband that sits on top of a phone line, our FTTC broadband page explains how that moves to a single-order connection.
Why go broadband only
Dropping the phone line is not just about the switchover. Businesses choose broadband only because:
- Calls already happen elsewhere: on mobiles, in Microsoft Teams, or on a cloud phone system that runs over the internet
- The old line may be doing little: if calls already go to mobiles or a cloud system, a separate line can be an unused extra
- One service, one order: a single-order connection keeps the setup simple
- It is ready for the PSTN closure: there is no analogue service left to migrate later
BT's pricing terms treat broadband-only plans and broadband bundles differently, including how the monthly price changes each April. We show you the difference in the quote rather than assume one is cheaper.
Is BT Business Broadband the right fit for you?
We will check it against your systems and requirements and recommend the right option.
Broadband only across the BT plans
Every BT Business Broadband plan can be ordered without a phone service where the address has Full Fibre or Standard Fibre:
- Essential for the core features: security controls, guest Wi-Fi, unlimited data and BT's Minimum Speed Guarantee.
- Enhanced adds Hybrid Backup and a static IP, which matter more once the broadband carries your calls as well as your data.
- Pro adds Smart Hub 3, Complete Wi-Fi Plus, Prompt Care and Wi-Fi Security Controls.
- BT Ultra Broadband is broadband only by design: BT does not bundle it with a Digital Line, so any voice service sits alongside it.
Essential, Enhanced and Pro can also be bundled with a Digital Line if you want the number on the same order; see broadband and phone. Choosing broadband only now does not stop you adding a phone service later.
Keeping your business number
Going broadband only does not mean losing your number. The usual routes are:
- A BT Digital Line (Cloud Voice Express) bundled with the broadband or added separately, answered on the mobile app or on a handset plugged into the Smart Hub. See broadband and phone and our sister site's page on BT Cloud Voice Express.
- BT Cloud Voice, a full cloud phone system for teams that runs over the broadband, with your existing numbers moved across. See BT Cloud Voice.
- Diverting to a mobile is possible, but most businesses prefer a proper digital service so the number is not tied to one person's phone.
We check each number and who currently provides it before anything is ordered, and we advise keeping the old service until the new one is working. Cancelling a line too early can lose the number.
Check what else is on the old line
Before a copper line goes, find out what is plugged into it. Equipment that can depend on a traditional line includes:
- Intruder and fire alarms that dial out to a monitoring centre
- Card machines that connect over a phone line rather than broadband or mobile
- Lift emergency phones, door and gate entry systems
- Franking machines, fax machines and older EPOS or takeaway systems that recognise callers by number
- Personal care pendants
Many of these now have broadband or mobile alternatives, but the supplier of each device needs to confirm it. Our PSTN switch-off and broadband guide covers the broadband side, and our sister site has a full guide to alarms and special lines and the wider PSTN switch-off in 2027.
Power cuts and resilience
Without a copper line, nothing at your premises is powered from the exchange. Broadband and any digital phone service stop in a power cut, and BT is clear that a digital line will not work in a power cut. Keep a charged mobile for emergencies.
For line faults rather than power cuts, Hybrid Backup switches your broadband to 4G automatically. It is included with Enhanced and Pro and can be added to Essential.
Moving from a phone line and broadband to broadband only
If you currently have broadband on top of a phone line, the move to a single-order connection usually runs like this:
- List what uses the line: phones, alarms, card machines, lifts, door entry, franking or fax. Ask each supplier whether their equipment works over broadband or mobile.
- Decide what happens to the number: move it to a Digital Line or BT Cloud Voice, or retire it if nobody uses it.
- Check the address: we confirm whether it can get Full Fibre or Standard Fibre, the speed tiers and BT's expected minimum speed.
- Choose the plan: Essential, Enhanced, Pro or Ultra, with any add-ons.
- Order in the right sequence: the new broadband and any new phone service are ordered so the number is not lost and the old line is only ceased once the replacements are working.
If you are moving to BT from another provider, see switching to BT. If you are moving premises at the same time, our moving premises guide covers the timing.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get BT business broadband without a phone line?
Yes, in most areas. Full Fibre and Standard Fibre (SOGEA) are single-order connections with no phone line, and BT says most areas can get broadband without one. Some BT copper lines still need a BT Business phone line.
Is SOGEA broadband without a phone line?
Yes. SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access), which BT sells as Standard Fibre, is fibre to the street cabinet and copper to your premises, ordered as broadband only with no phone service.
Does Full Fibre need a phone line?
No. Full Fibre (FTTP) runs fibre all the way to your premises and needs no phone line.
How do I keep my business number without a phone line?
Move it to a digital service, such as a BT Digital Line (Cloud Voice Express) or BT Cloud Voice. We check the number before ordering, and the old line should stay in place until the new service is working.
Can I still buy a traditional phone line from BT?
No. BT says it is no longer selling traditional phone lines because of the digital switchover, with the old network closing by January 2027.
