In short
BT Ultra vs Pro: Pro uses Smart Hub 3, Complete Wi-Fi Plus and Wi-Fi Security Controls managed in the BT Business app, includes a static IP and can bundle a Digital Line. Ultra uses Cisco Meraki security and access points managed by BT, adds a firewall and intrusion prevention, has no static IP and is broadband only.

The short answer
Both plans share a lot. Each runs on Full Fibre or Standard Fibre, includes 4G mobile backup, guest Wi-Fi, BT's Prompt Care and BT's Minimum Speed Guarantee, and neither is available on copper.
The difference is the approach:
- BT Business Broadband Pro is a hub plan you run yourself. Smart Hub 3, Complete Wi-Fi Plus discs and Wi-Fi Security Controls are all managed by you in the BT Business app.
- BT Ultra Broadband is a managed network. A Cisco Meraki security appliance and access points replace the hub and discs, the security package adds a firewall and intrusion prevention, and BT makes configuration changes on request.
Neither is simply better. The right one depends on whether you need a static IP, a phone line on the same order, coverage for a larger building, or managed perimeter security.

Router and Wi-Fi
Pro's Smart Hub 3 is BT's Wi-Fi 6 hub, which BT says connects over 100 devices. Complete Wi-Fi Plus discs pair with it to make one network across the premises. BT backs this with a coverage guarantee for the main building for the first six months, including up to five extra discs if needed, and the right to end the Pro contract if coverage still falls short.
Ultra's Meraki security appliance is a business router and firewall, and the Wi-Fi comes from separate Meraki Wi-Fi 6 access points: one cabled, up to two more meshed, fitted by the BT engineer. BT says each covers about a 10-15m radius, and the hard limit is three. There is no equivalent coverage guarantee, so the building matters more. For multi-floor or multi-building premises, Pro's discs are often easier to extend. See Ultra Broadband Wi-Fi for the detail.
Security: devices or the network edge
The security on each plan works at a different level:
- Pro's Wi-Fi Security Controls are about devices. You can see what is connected, approve new devices before they join, put devices into groups, schedule blocks or pause access instantly, filter content at light, moderate, strict or custom levels, block named websites, and turn on device threat protection against malware and phishing. You do all of it yourself in the app. It filters websites, not apps.
- Ultra's Cisco Meraki security package is about the network edge. A next-generation layer 7 firewall, URL filtering across 70+ categories with a default template, malware protection backed by Cisco threat intelligence, and intrusion detection and prevention protect everything behind the appliance. BT makes changes on request.
If what you want is control over who and what joins the network, and instant changes from your phone, Pro fits. If what you want is a firewall and intrusion prevention without managing them, Ultra fits. Our broadband security guide covers the full range of options.
Weighing it up?
We can look at your sites and requirements and give you a straight answer.
Backup and static IP
Both plans keep you online on 4G if the fixed line fails, but in different ways. Pro uses BT's Hybrid Backup, a Hybrid Connect device alongside the hub. BT says your static IP and IP voice keep working on Hybrid Backup, and that it can get you online before the line is installed. Ultra builds cellular backup into the Meraki equipment.
The static IP is often the deciding factor. Pro includes one; Ultra does not support static IPs. BT's July 2025 briefing note says a static IP may be added to Ultra in future but is not expected to fail over to the backup connection. If anything you use depends on a fixed address, such as remote desktop, a VPN, CCTV viewing or a supplier's allow-list, Pro is the plan. See static IP addresses.
Phones and bundling
Pro can be bundled with a BT Digital Line (Cloud Voice Express), so broadband and a business number arrive on one order; see broadband and phone.
Ultra is broadband only. BT does not bundle it with a Digital Line or other services, so any voice service is ordered separately. That works well for teams on BT Cloud Voice, which runs over either plan, and the Ultra Expert Setup engineer helps move BT-provided IP phones onto the new network.
Choose Pro if, choose Ultra if
| Choose Pro if | Choose Ultra if |
|---|---|
| You need a static IP address | Nothing you use depends on a static IP |
| You want a Digital Line on the same order | Your voice service is separate, or you use BT Cloud Voice |
| You want to manage devices and filters yourself, from the app | You want BT to make security changes for you |
| Wi-Fi coverage across a larger or awkward building is the priority | Your premises is compact enough for up to three access points |
| Device control and filtering are enough security | You want a firewall and intrusion prevention as standard |
| You want BT's Wi-Fi coverage guarantee | You want a 150-minute Expert Setup visit included |
When neither plan fits
BT's own guidance says Ultra is not for complex or bespoke networks, customers who want to manage security themselves, customers who want a proactively monitored service, or customers keeping an existing third-party firewall. Pro is a hub plan and is not designed for those needs either.
If that sounds like your business, the next steps are usually:
- A leased line for dedicated, symmetrical bandwidth and a stronger service level: see when to upgrade to a leased line, and leased line vs broadband on our leased line site
- A designed network you or your IT provider manage, such as a Meraki firewall and access points, supplied separately by Forever Group
- Multi-supplier connectivity advice for several sites: see Forever Group's business connectivity services
Getting a recommendation from us
We supply both Pro and Ultra, so we have no reason to push one over the other. We check what your address can get, ask about static IPs, phones, your building and how you want security managed, then quote the plan that fits, or both side by side if it is close. We place the order and help with installation and set-up questions.

Frequently asked questions
Is BT Ultra better than Pro?
Not across the board. Ultra adds a managed Cisco Meraki firewall, intrusion prevention and access points, while Pro includes a static IP, BT's Wi-Fi coverage guarantee, app-based device controls and the option of a Digital Line bundle. The better plan depends on what you need.
Does BT Ultra Broadband include Wi-Fi Security Controls?
No. Ultra replaces Wi-Fi Security Controls with the Cisco Meraki security package. Wi-Fi Security Controls is only available on Pro.
Which plan includes a static IP, Ultra or Pro?
Pro includes one static IP address. BT says static IPs are not supported on Ultra.
Can I bundle a phone line with Ultra or Pro?
Pro can be bundled with a BT Digital Line. Ultra is broadband only, so a Digital Line or BT Cloud Voice is ordered separately.
Do both Ultra and Pro include Prompt Care?
Yes. Both include BT's Prompt Care, with faults reported before 9pm Monday to Saturday targeted for a fix by the end of the next working day, including Saturdays.
Can I move from Pro to Ultra?
BT positions Ultra as a step up from Enhanced and Pro. Check first whether you use the static IP that comes with Pro, because Ultra does not support one. Terms for changing plan are confirmed at quote; see our upgrade guide.
